Step 1: Love

Your life as a Christian is a journey with God on which we will never stop learning and growing in love. But where can we start? Jesus gave us an outline for living as a Christian that is so simple anyone can understand it and yet so vast that we will follow it our whole lives.

Mark 12:28-31 [28] And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” [29] Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. [30] And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ [31] The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

The Christian life can be summarized in these two commands:
1. Love God
2. Love People

Everyday we try to live with these two goals in mind!

1. HOW CAN WE LOVE GOD?

Heart & Soul

God is seeking more from us than external actions; he wants our hearts. Invite God into the deepest parts of your heart and soul everyday. God wants to be the closest and most important relationship we have. Spend quality time with God through prayer and bible (see Steps 2 & 3), worship God (see Step 4).

Mind

Use the intellect God has given you to know him, his Word, and his will. Think about God. Study, learn, and memorize his Word.

Strength

Use your strength, energy, time, and abilities to serve God. Join God’s mission, (see below and Step 5), serve God (see Step 9), work for God at work, school, or home, (see Step 10), obey what he commands. Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” John 14:15

2. HOW CAN WE LOVE PEOPLE?

Jesus told us to love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:31).

Who is our neighbor? Jesus taught that our neighbor can be anyone and everyone (Luke 10:29-37). Christians are to love everyone, including our enemies (Matthew 5:44).

What does love others “as yourself” mean? Jesus explains it very simply in Matthew 7:12 "So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them...."

Application:

Jesus taught us how to love God and love people when he commanded us to share the message of God's love with others. Obedience to this command is love toward God. Additionally, Christians evangelize because we LOVE GOD: What we love we commend to others out of the overflow of our hearts. Also, Christians evangelize because we LOVE PEOPLE: We want everyone to be reconciled to God and thereby enjoy eternal life and happiness with God. The greatest act of love we can show toward any human is to meet their deepest need--to be introduced to a relationship with God.

Matthew 28:18-20 "[18] And Jesus came and said to them, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. [19] Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, [20] teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.'"

How can we start?

1. Prayer List

Take out a piece of paper and pen or open a note app on your phone. Silently to yourself, pray to God and ask him to help you think of every family member, friend, co-worker, neighbor, acquaintance, or anyone else in your life who is not a Christian. Write their names down. How many names are on your list? You need to pray for the people on this list everyday. First, pray that God will give you wisdom in how to share gospel with them and opportunities to share with them. Second, pray that the Holy Spirit will prepare them and give them a heart that is hungry for God so that when you share the gospel they will believe and accept Jesus.

2. Testimony

In order to make a disciple you have to share the gospel. One helpful transition in conversation to introduce the gospel is sharing your personal testimony of how you encountered Jesus and became a Christian. It’s helpful if you can share an abbreviated version of your testimony in under 3 minutes. Brainstorm for a few minutes. You can share your testimony by answering these three questions: What was your life like before you became a Christian? How did you encounter Christ and become a Christian? What is your life like now that you are a Christian? Remember to imagine sharing this in an everyday conversation with a friend or family member. Share your testimony with a partner in your group. Help each other to improve or streamline your testimonies. Practice sharing your testimony again (with another partner in the group, if possible).

3. Gospel

After you've shared your story you need to share Jesus' story. One of the ways you can share the gospel is by inviting someone to study the First Steps with you. It is only 4 times and can be led by anyone, anywhere. It's accessible online here: mustardseedosaka.com/teaching-e/first-steps

Finally, let's make a goal and pray for one another. Look at your prayer list. Choose the names of 1-3 people with whom you want to share your testimony in the next two weeks. Share the names with one another and pray for one another and for these people. Next time we will ask each other how it went!
